Rock Port girls hoops downs Mound City, wins Class 1 District 16 Championship for second straight season
(STANBERRY, MO) - The 1 seed Rock Port High School girls basketball team survived a tough effort from 2 seed Mound City as the Lady Blue Jays win the Class 1 District 16 Championship, 41-37.
Mound City led 20-19 at the half and the game was tied at 31-31 at the end of the third quarter but the Lady Blue Jays surged ahead in the fourth quarter and didn't give the lead back.
Senior Ella Meyerkorth led the way with 12 points, she also scored her 1,000th career point Friday evening. Sophomore Audrie Meyerkorth was second on the team with 11 points. For Mound City, sophomore Peyton Farr led the team with 11 points, but Rock Port's defense held her scoreless in the second half. Junior Maggie Osburn was held to 8 points.
"We've been there before, so why not let's be there again," said Audrie Meyerkorth. "Let's just keep getting it, and I know we know how that feels, so we're just searching for that feeling again."
"Honestly, just hustling, who wanted it more, it just comes down to that," said Ella Meyerkorth. "Who wants it more and who's, it was a bloodbath the whole game."
"It means a lot, and it shows that the girls have a lot of fight, they held us to 41, but I think 37 was what we held them to, so a good defensive battle," said head coach Austin Alitz.
It's now the fourth time Rock Port has beaten Mound City this season, Blue Jays improve to 26-2 on the season. Mound City ends the season the a 23-6 record.
Rock Port will now face North Andrew in the Class 1 State Sectionals on Monday, March 2nd at St. Joseph Christian High School at 7 pm.
