Tracking Tuesday heat & scattered showers
Good morning and happy Tuesday!
As you're heading out the door this morning, we're dry here in St. Joseph as of 3:05 a.m., but it's another hot and humid start to the day. Temperatures are still in the lower 80s, and with very light southerly winds, the air feels dense and muggy. Heat index values are already climbing into the upper 80s and lower 90s for some locations.
Relief is on the way, though. A cold front is slowly pushing south, and you can already see northerly winds developing across Iowa and Nebraska. That cooler, drier air will gradually work into our area later today.
We're also tracking a few scattered showers this morning. A cold front and an area of low pressure just to our north and west are producing showers across northeastern Kansas and portions of northwestern Missouri, mainly south of Atchison. Those showers will continue moving east through the morning hours, bringing a chance for a few passing downpours during the morning commute.
If you're heading out around 8 a.m., expect a hot, humid, and occasionally wet commute, so keep the umbrella handy. By lunchtime, the rain shifts south of Highway 36, with only a few lingering showers remaining. Most of us dry out during the afternoon, although clouds and humidity will stick around.
High temperatures today will reach the upper 80s to around 90 degrees. It will still be hot and humid, but noticeably less oppressive than yesterday.
Tonight, we'll hold on to a slight chance for a few sprinkles, but most locations stay dry. Overnight lows will fall back into the 70s for the first time in several days.
The biggest change arrives Wednesday as the cold front finally pushes through. Humidity levels will drop significantly, making the air feel much more comfortable as you head out the door Wednesday morning.
We'll keep on-and-off chances for scattered showers through Friday, with Thursday and Friday currently looking like the best opportunities for measurable rainfall. By the weekend, sunshine returns, and temperatures settle back near seasonal averages.
Expect highs around 90 degrees today, then upper 80s Wednesday through the weekend with much lower humidity. It will be a much more comfortable stretch of weather, just in time for the weekend.
