Hamilton Boys hoops defeats Wellington-Napoleon in Class 2 State Sectional

The Penney High School boys basketball team met Wellington-Napoleon at Mid-Buchanan R-V on Tuesday night in the first round of the Missouri State Class 2 Basketball tournament. The Hornets came away with a 64-46 victory.

This is the first time since the 2010/2011 season that Penney Men's Basketball team has made it to the State Quarterfinals.

The Hornets would put up a heavy offense early on by ending the first quarter with 14 points, and ending the first half with 31 points on the scoreboard.

After a competitive four quarters, Penney would advance in the tournament with a score of 64 - 46 over Wellington-Napoleon.

Senior Jacob Miller led the Hornets with 25 points, followed by freshman Hudson Creekmore with 21 points and sophomore Jared Cooley with 10.

"I was really happy with our defense, I thought we did a really good job," Penney head coach Doug Burnett said. "We just talked about, that one turnover, one bad shot, that's the difference in beating the next team."

"Everyday in the districts, it's win or go home," Creekmore said. "We wanna play with this team as long as we can, and we take that into every game."

The Hornets will face Lincoln High School this Saturday at Blue Springs High School at 1 p.m. in the State Quarterfinals of the Class 2 tournament.
