Rock Port girls hoops falls to Delta on late-game run in Class 1 State Semifinals in Columbia

(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Rock Port High School girls basketball team played in the Class 1 State Semifinals in Columbia for the second straight season on Wednesday. Through a little over three quarters, it appeared the Lady Blue Jays would advance to the title game.

After a back and forth battle, Rock Port was able to take an eight point lead with just under six minutes to play.

But then Delta came alive and could not be stopped down the stretch. The Ladycats ended the game on a 20-0 run to go on to win, 67-55.

"That's a tough team to beat, because they just do so many things that you can't replicate, especially for 32 minutes," said Rock Port head coach Austin Alitz. "We had some runs and we knew it would be a game of runs and we just didn't get them timed out right."

Sophomore Audrie Meyerkorth led Rock Port with 20 points, followed by senior Ella Meyerkorth with 15 points. Freshman Stevie Gaines finished with a double-double, 14 points and 13 rebounds.

"Keep our heads up. We have to get a win tomorrow because it sucks to lose, said Audrie Meyerkorth. "We're a good team and we can do great things. So let's just win our last game and go out with a win."

It's just the third defeat all season for Rock Port, the team's first in a month. The 28-3 Lady Blue Jays will now face Northeast Cairo in the Class 1 State Third Place Game on Thursday, March 12th at 10 am in Columbia.
