Missouri State Highway Patrol urge caution as Spring driving hazards return
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV)-- While winter is known for treacherous driving conditions, spring can also present challenges for drivers.
From spring storms and sun glare to sharing the road with two-wheeled vehicles, it’s important for drivers to pay close attention.
Missouri State Highway Patrol Public Information and Education Officer Sgt. Shane Hux said motorists need to adjust their driving habits during heavy rain.
“Decrease your speed, and increase your following distance when it comes to traffic. Remember, when it’s raining outside, make sure you have your headlights on," he said. "That is required by law as well. It also increases your visibility out there to other motorists."
Hux also provided tips on what to do if a vehicle hydroplanes.
“Let off the accelerator, do not apply the brake and try to steer your way out of it,” he said.
According to the University of Missouri Climate Center, on average, the Show-Me state experiences just over 30 tornadoes a year.
Hux also shared tips for driving during a tornado, noting that if you see one, to drive away.
"If that’s not an option, you need to exit your vehicle and move to the lowest area where you are,” he said. "If that's a ditch, be cautious of that because it can fill with water rapidly. Use your hands to cover your head. If that ditch does fill with water, remove yourself from there and run away as quickly as possible."
Hux urged caution to drivers, as warmer weather typically brings more bicyclists and motorcyclists. He explained that drivers need to stop and look both ways a few times if they come across a stop sign.
Allergy season is also returning with the arrival of spring. Hux said always read the warnings on allergy medication.
"Benadryl can make a person sleepy, and a sleepy driver is just as dangerous as an impaired driver. If it says do not operate a motor vehicle, or if it can cause drowsiness, keep that in mind and do not operate a motor vehicle when utilizing those types of substances," he said.
Hux also said drivers should follow warning signs in road construction areas.
“It’s a common courtesy if there’s a lane closure, don’t drive up to the end of that lane and then merge into traffic at the last second,” he said. “Be patient, everybody has a destination to get to.”
When experiencing sun glare, motorists should utilize their sun visor and a good pair of sunglasses. The first official day of Spring is March 20.
