Missouri House looks to finalize budget proposal; MoWest at risk of losing $6 million in funding

File

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KQTV) -- Missouri Western State University could lose millions of dollars in state funding if the latest budget proposal makes it through Missouri's House and Senate.

The Missouri Budget Committee approved State Representative Dirk Deaton’s (R-District 159) plan to pool higher education funding and redistribute it based on student numbers earlier this month.

On Tuesday, the Missouri House gave first-round approval to the new funding model.

MoWest was scheduled to receive $27.2 million in FY 2027, but under the new process, the university would receive $21.12 million.

The original $27.2 million allocation appeared in Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe’s January budget proposal.

The Missouri House of Representatives is expected to officially vote Thursday on the higher education budget. If it passes, the proposal will move to the Senate.
