Northwest student org holds ‘I Will Listen’ event

MARYVILLE, Mo. (KQTV) -- Students and community members made their way through the second floor of the union on Northwest Missouri State University's campus for the annual 'I Will Listen' event.

This event, organized by the campus's Behavioral Science Association (BSA), aimed to reduce stigma around mental illness through talks, displays, and activities. Notably, the program included an art show that encouraged Northwest students and community members to express their feelings on mental health.

Among the contributors to the art show was double-major student Alyssa Cage, who is also a BSA member. Building on the event's inclusive nature, Cage appreciated not only helping organize the program but also seeing pieces displayed by area primary school students and even members of a nearby assisted living facility.

Continuing the theme of community connection, Cage recalled being present as the facility's residents visited to view their art on display and were impressed by the thoughts expressed by younger individuals.

"They appreciated seeing the younger students express themselves through art," Cage shared. "They were surprised by the depth and meaning in the students' work."

Cage stated that events like this are not only for educational purposes or for those related to their major.

"We conduct research on this and know that students enjoy these events because they support self-expression, foster community engagement, and promote healing and empathy," Cage said. "It's important for people to realize they're not alone in their feelings and that others share similar experiences."

In addition to the art displays and talks, visitors could enjoy performances by various musicians and singers presenting pieces focused on mental health.

All proceeds collected at the event were donated to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
