St. Joseph Museums launch local history curriculum with $15K grant

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV)-- The St. Joseph Museums have received a $15,000 grant from the Missouri Humanities Council to support a new project: “St. Joseph History Curriculum: Bringing Local History to School.”

This project is all about helping K–12 students connect with the rich history of St. Joseph in a meaningful, engaging way.

The team is developing a full set of classroom resources designed with teachers in mind—complete with easy-to-use guides, carefully selected primary sources and artifact toolboxes to bring history off the page and into students’ hands.

Students will dive into key moments and themes from St. Joseph’s past, including civil rights history, early settlement and development, industrial growth and Native American cultures.

The grant will help fund two major pieces of the project: the purchase of a 3D printer and scanner to create replica artifacts for classroom use and the development of a dedicated website along with educational videos to support learning.

Throughout the process, the St. Joseph Museums will work closely with local educators, cultural organizations and community partners to make sure the curriculum truly meets the needs of the region.

Development is set to begin in August 2026, with the curriculum rolling out in classrooms during the 2027–2028 school year.
