Lafayette High School baseball gets regular season sweep over Maryville

(ST. JOSEPH, MO) - The Lafayette High School baseball team came away with a 12-7 victory over Maryville Wednesday afternoon in Phil Welch Stadium.

The Fighting Irish were down 4-2 in the third inning and then 6-4 in the 5th but kept coming back. The Irish racked up 8 combined runs in the 5th and 6th innings to clinch the victory.

Freshman Bentley Manaserro finished 3-for-4 at the plate with 5 RBI, junior Elijah Castle was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI, senior Logan Beedle was 2-for-4 with 1 RBI and senior Carter Bruce was 1-for-3 with 1 RBI.

Castle and sophomore Jaxson Jonas combined to throw 9 strikeouts for Lafayette.

"The balls are just coming off the bat like popcorn, man. We were swinging the bat so good that fifth inning, and we just caught fire, man," said Manaserro. "I feel like we're the Avengers. We can beat anybody."

"You have to go take it. You can't expect it. You can't expect to make up a bunch of runs late every inning, every bat, you just gotta go out and take it. That's been what we've been preaching to the guys since day one," said Lafayette head coach Matt Jansen. "It's gonna be a fistfight, so we're all about that. We get up for these games and that's how you wanna play come playoff time. So it's a dress rehearsal to try and get ready for that win or go home."

For Maryville, sophomore Connolly Mayfield finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, junior Jackson Wilmes was 2-for-4 with 1 RBI and sophomore Lucas Riley was 2-for-3 with 1 RBI.

Lafayette improves to 7-6 on the season and next hosts Ruskin on Thursday, April 16th at 4 pm. Maryville drops to 7-7 and next plays Wamego in the WOW Wood Bat Tournament on Friday, April 17th at Phil Welch Stadium at 4:30 pm.
