Missouri Senate pushes tax overhaul through in late-night session

KMIZ

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KQTV)-- The Missouri Senate pushed a tax overhaul initiative through an overnight vote Thursday morning.

Following Governor Mike Kehoe's mission to eliminate the state income tax, the new plan uses a broader sales tax to make up the difference in lost revenue from an income tax elimination.

The Senate approved the plan with an 18-11 vote early Thursday morning.

The plan still removes the income tax, but now, it expands sales tax options to include taxation on "any goods or services".

If the legislation passes a final vote in the Missouri House, it wouldn’t take effect right away—it would go to Missouri voters in November to decide the proposed constitutional amendment.
