ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV)-- Community members and families came together at Pershing Elementary School to celebrate and encourage students at the start of end of year testing.

Among those in attendance was Jeff Atkins, representing the city, while also cheering on his great-nieces and nephews.

“We do care. Apparently more than just your parents, the whole community cares about what you do and we care how good you do it,” Atkins said.

Atkins said it’s more important than many people realize to make sure kids truly understand how much their community supports them.

Families and neighbors showed up in full force at Pershing Elementary, creating a strong show of support for students.

“It’s fun when you know the kids, and they all got to see Uncle Jeff and they all seemed happy about that,” Atkins added.

Fourth-grade teacher Mary Sanders said community support is something they emphasize in the classroom, which was something students were able to see in full-force Monday afternoon.

Students from Lafayette High School also joined in, performing music and encouraging the younger students.

“It was really nice to have them Playing their bands and being here to support our kids and excite them for our state exam,” Sanders added.

Sanders pointed out how taking time to celebrate students can go a long way—boosting confidence and motivation.

She said the growth she has seen in her classroom is another primary reason this celebration was needed.

“I just think its important that we are telling our kids and staff you know just how valued they are and how appreciated they are that the work is still getting done every day,” Sanders said.

She really stressed keeping the focus on the kids and students. Which means anytime there’s a chance to pause, lift their spirits and celebrate the work they’re doing, it’s something to encourage.
