Missouri American Water to begin water main and fire hydrant maintenance

File

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- Missouri American Water said it is set to begin its annual water main and fire hydrant maintenance, or flushing, program in St. Joseph and Stewartsville, Missouri, next week.

The maintenance will continue through June and will take place during regular business hours, Monday through Friday.

The routine work is part of an annual program aimed to enhance water service, quality and fire protection in the community.

In conjunction with the flushing, Missouri American Water is temporarily adjusting its water treatment process from chloramines to free chlorine.

Chlorine is commonly used in water systems as a disinfectant and is monitored closely by water quality experts to achieve optimum levels, according to a news release.

Customers may notice a temporary chlorine taste and odor in tap water, Missouri American Water said the instance is not a cause for concern.

"This flushing program helps us maintain high-quality water throughout St. Joseph's distribution system while our crews inspect and operate fire hydrants to ensure they're working properly," said John Hontz, senior manager of Operations for Missouri American Water.

Water service interruptions are not expected; however, when crews are flushing nearby, customers may experience a drop in water pressure or temporary water discoloration. If this occurs, let the cold tap run until the water is clear.
