ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV)-- Mosaic Life Care held its second cohort of Nursing Scholars Promise Day signing on Monday, celebrating a new group of students committing to careers in healthcare.

The event is part of a partnership with Missouri Western State University aimed at helping local high school graduates pursue nursing degrees through scholarship support.

Chief Executive officer of Mosaic Life Care, Mike Poore said selected students will have half of their tuition covered.

“They will come out with a guaranteed job and in the meantime they actually get to work at the hospital and get paid while they are working so they work alongside our caregivers,” Poore said.

During the ceremony, students signed agreements outlining the program where Mosiac will help pay for their education and in return, graduates commit to working for the health system at Mosaic.

Poore said the initiative is designed to strengthen the local workforce and keep healthcare talent in the community.

“Also work with the university to be able to provide the care givers that we will need for tomorrow,” Poore added.

15 students from high schools across the region were selected for this year’s program out of about 50 applicants.

Poore said choosing local students increases the likelihood they’ll stay and serve the community long-term.

“We had our first scholars of promise last year and those students are in school right now and they are going into their sophomore year and this is our second cohort so they will be all incoming freshmen,” Poore said.

Poore also took a moment to recognize the students and their families.

“We do this signing a lot like athletes sign for school but these scholars will be here to take care of their community,” Poore said.

He also praised the nursing program at MoWest, noting its recent success, including a 100% pass rate on nursing entrance exams.
