Savannah teen paints nearly 200 fire hydrants for Eagle Scout badge
SAVANNAH, Mo. (KQTV) -- Brisco Lund comes from a family with a rich scouting history, which inspired him to earn his Eagle Scout badge at 16.
Inspired by his uncle, grandfather, and accomplished Girl Scout mother, Savannah student Brisco Lund wanted to try scouting after hearing family stories and seeing his older brother get involved.
He saw that scouting could teach lessons and leadership useful for his other passions, like sports and band.
"I enjoyed being in scouts and connecting with others, doing exciting activities, and working toward goals," Lund shared. "Scouting has taught me to lead by example, especially when I’m at camp or on staff guiding younger scouts."
Brisco Lund's current Eagle Scout project involves painting nearly 200 fire hydrants in Savannah to aid the community.
Lund helped organize a project with other scouts to paint hydrants and identify their flow rate. It’s more than refreshing appearances, he shared.
This helps the Savannah Fire Department quickly identify which hydrants have sufficient flow in emergencies without having to stop to check charts.
Once Lund sought a project, the idea came to him with help from his grandfather, who had a connection in the Savannah FD.
Brisco Lund strives to benefit both his fellow scouts and the community, joining the 3-5% of scouts who achieve Eagle Scout status, as noted by his assistant Scout Master, Matt Whipple.
"Achieving Eagle Scout is not easy; it takes a lot of dedication," Whipple told KQ2. "I have watched scouts like Brisco mature and gain leadership skills over the years, transitioning from follower to leader, which makes me very proud."
Whipple is a proud mentor, and Lund’s mother, Jamie, is pleased to see her son continue the family scouting legacy.
“He manages classes, stays involved in scouts, and wants to achieve this. He works at Camp Geiger during the summer,” Jamie said. “Scouting is great for kids, with many activities and flexibility.”
Lund is expected to earn his Eagle Scout title in the next month.
