One dead, multiple juveniles injured in single-vehicle rollover on I-29 in Buchanan County

BUCHANAN COUNTY, Mo. (KQTV) -- A single-vehicle crash on Interstate 29 southbound at mile marker 35 resulted in one fatality and injuries to multiple juvenile occupants on the morning of June 13, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:40 a.m. when a 2004 Ford Expedition, driven by a 34-year-old male from St. Joseph, Missouri, experienced a blowout of the rear driver's side tire.

The driver lost control, and the vehicle traveled off the west side of the roadway before overturning multiple times.

The Expedition came to rest on its roof, facing northwest.

The driver was pronounced deceased at 11:37 a.m. by Buchanan County Assistant Medical Examiner M. Hess.

His body was transported to Meierhoffer Funeral Home, next of kin has been notified.

The vehicle was occupied by 11 individuals total, including the driver.

The following injuries were reported:

  • Adult male driver, age 34, St. Joseph, MO - fatal injury
  • Adult female occupant, age 36, St. Joseph, MO - minor injury

Juvenile occupants:

  • 16-year-old female, Leavenworth, KS - serious injury
  • 14-year-old female, Leavenworth, KS - serious injury
  • 13-year-old female, Leavenworth, KS - serious injury
  • 10-year-old male, Leavenworth, KS - minor injury
  • 8-year-old female, Leavenworth, KS - minor injury
  • 3-year-old female, St. Joseph, MO - minor injury
  • 2-year-old male, St. Joseph, MO - moderate injury
  • Female infant (age 0), St. Joseph, MO - no injury
  • Female infant (age 0), St. Joseph, MO - no injury

All occupants were wearing safety devices, according to the report.

All parties were transported by Buchanan County EMS.

Several were taken directly to Children's Mercy Hospital, while others were first transported to Mosaic in St. Joseph before being transferred to Children's Mercy Hospital.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by Sgt. L.M. Newman, Sgt. C.O. Tubbs, Tpr. S.P. Gomez, and the Buchanan County Sheriff's Department.
