ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- Evergy hosted its annual fan donation event in partnership with local agencies Tuesday.

One of the participating locations was the InterServ Wesley Center, located at 5400 King Hill Ave.

Evergy donated approximately 20 fans and/or air conditioning units to help community members stay cool during the summer heat.

Dan Hegeman, Evergy’s senior community business manager, said the company has a long history of giving back through its fan donation program, distributing more than 50,000 fans across its service territory over the years.

“We are happy to give back to our community, get back to some of our customers as we approach the hot time of the year,” he said.

In addition to partnering with InterServ, Evergy is also working with AFL-CIO on the north side of St. Joseph and Grace House in the Midtown area to get fans into the hands of residents who need them most.

Hegeman said the fan giveaway is a great opportunity for Evergy employees to make a direct impact in the communities they serve.

"This is a way our Evergy volunteers can help get back to our customers and give these fans out. We will also be donating these fans in the Maryville area as well as the Trenton area,” he said.

For InterServ, the donation provides valuable support for families visiting its food pantry.

Jan Stone, InterServ’s individual and family services manager, said many of the families they serve do not have air conditioning, and some don’t even have fans to help keep their homes cool.

"We will give them out as long as they last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 1 to 3:45 p.m. during the food pantry hours,” Stone said.

Stone also said many families are already familiar with the annual giveaway, but InterServ will also post signs to make sure visitors know the fans are available.

She hopes the donation helps families stay comfortable and safe during the summer and in the heat.
