ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The St. Joseph Police Department recently partnered with REHOPE and the medical team from RISE Coalition, as well as other community organizations, to conduct an operation focused on identifying and helping victims of human trafficking.

The primary objective of the operation was to identify vulnerable individuals, gather information to assist with ongoing investigations and connect potential victims with immediate resources, advocacy, medical care and long-term support services.

Trained advocates and medical professionals were available throughout the operation to provide crisis intervention, safety planning, medical assistance and information about community resources available to those seeking help.

According to a news release from SJPD, human trafficking is often a hidden crime affecting many individuals.

Victims typically experience coercion, manipulation, intimidation, addiction or violence, making it difficult to leave their circumstances or seek assistance on their own.

SJPD said that by bringing law enforcement together with victim service providers, individuals are given an opportunity to receive support in a safe environment.

Additionally, the department said that anyone who suspects human trafficking or believes someone may be a victim is encouraged to contact SJPD at 816-271-4777 or submit information anonymously through the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline at 816-238-TIPS (8477).
