MoDOT gives update on I-229 Double-Decker bridge, business owners express concerns about Downtown exits

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The Missouri Department of Transportation gave an update during a meeting on Tuesday for plans for the Interstate 229 Double-Decker bridge.

The I-229 Double-Decker bridge has been a staple for the last 43 years and is nearing the end of its 50-year life expectancy. The plan now is to replace it with a four-lane roadway, but Downtown exits still have yet to be decided on.

Project Director Joyce Reynolds gave an update on what the roadway will look like.

"It's gonna be nicer than what it is now," said Reynolds. "It will function very similar to the way it does now and hopefully the community can see that it's gonna be better."

While MoDOT is working on potential plans, Downtown business owners made their voices heard during Tuesday's meeting as this project could affect their businesses.

Ashley Dawson, a Downtown business owner, expressed that having this project be successful is important for the development of Downtown.

"I think access to Downtown via the highway there along the river is absolutely crucial," said Dawson. "We've had such wonderful growth Downtown. I think the highway's success and its access to our downtown is absolutely critical."

Jeff Waggoner, owner of The Den, is still looking for more details on the project as a plan is still being developed.

"The hope is they put in the exit for Downtown," said Waggoner. "It would be nice to get some answers and get the ball rolling."
