SJSD board approves resolution opposing Amendment 5

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV)-- The St. Joseph School District's Board of Education approved a resolution Monday night opposing Amendment 5 on the August primary ballot.

Board President Ronda Chesney said several board members worked together on the resolution because of concerns about how changes to state funding could affect the district. 

“We have concerns about some of the lack of funding through the state through the foundation formula," Chesney said.

If passed on Aug. 4, Amendment 5 would phase out the state income tax.

Chesney said the board wanted to come together to make sure community members have the facts and understand how the proposal could impact the district locally. 

She said she hopes residents will take a close look at the numbers and consider what the potential financial impact could mean for the district.  

“We also have been working through our finances tonight as Dr. Hedgecorth presented some growth in our finances. We were able to stay on budget and that’s exciting for our district,” Chesney said.  

Even with that progress, Chesney said the board remains concerned about how future funding changes could affect students and families. 

The board's next meeting, a work session, is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 10, at 5:30 p.m. in the Troester Media Center.
