MSHP reminds Missourians of water safety during the summer season

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The Missouri State Highway Patrol wants to remind the public of the importance of water safety during the summer season.

So far in 2026, the patrol has responded to 27 drownings and 30 total water fatalities.

That's an 80% increase in statewide drownings and more than a 36% increase in total water fatalities from this time in 2025.

Drowning occurs quickly, and in many cases, the drowning itself isn't witnessed. MSHP said it's important to take safety precautions when going swimming.

State law requires that children under seven wear a life jacket while on a watercraft.

For teens and even adults, it's often an overestimation of their swimming ability.

As Missouri heads into what's typically the hottest weather of the year, MSHP wants to make sure those on the water stay safe and prepared.
