Decorated Christian Brothers High School basketball player inducted into St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- St. Joseph has a rich basketball history dating back more than 100 years. There have been a lot of great coaches, players, and teams over the years. In the 1960s, one player made a dominating impact at Christian Brothers High School.

"He was just smooth, wasn't a ball hog," Benny Pecora Jr. said. "And that guy could get open. He'd usually be double-teamed and we'd have to move the ball around, and here come Jesse come popping through somewhere and bam, two."

Jesse Barbosa is one of the very best basketball players to come out of St. Joseph.

"He was a generational player for the four years," Ron Barbosa said. "But at the same time, that goes back into the '60s, so a lot of people really didn't know much about him."

Barbosa scored 1,722 points over four years at Christian Brothers High School — the most ever by a city player before the three-point shot.

"I talked to people and they say, 'Barbosa, we didn't want to guard him. We didn't want to guard him,'" John Cathcart said.

The four-time all-city selection starred on varsity all four years, including a 42-point performance against Central. Barbosa earned three all-district and all-state selections and was an honorable mention All-American in 1963.

"City Auditorium would be full on Saturday nights to watch the games, and Jesse was an attraction," Cathcart said.

For his accomplishments and accolades, Barbosa is taking his rightful place in the St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame.

"It's an era in St. Joseph that needs to be told, and it's going to be told here — not only what he accomplished, but also the school he represented," Ron Barbosa said.

Barbosa is a member of the Class of 2026 for the St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame.
