Chiefs rout Denver in season opener

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KQTV) -- The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Denver Broncos 31-10 in their season opener Monday night on Monday Night Football.

Kansas City scored first on a 15-yard touchdown run by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was playing in his first game since tearing his ACL on Dec. 14.

Bo Nix and the Broncos answered with a touchdown pass from Nix to tight end Evan Engram to tie it 7-7.

The Chiefs added a second-quarter score on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to wide receiver Rashee Rice.

Kansas City led 14-7 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Chiefs running back Kenneth Walker III scored on a 60-yard touchdown run.

Denver added a field goal later in the third, but Harrison Butker kicked a 28-yard field goal to make it 24-10.

The Chiefs added an insurance score in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Walker.

Kansas City finished with 392 yards of total offense.

Patrick Mahomes completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Mahomes also rushed for 23 yards and a touchdown.

Kenneth Walker rushed for 173 yards and a touchdown. He also caught three passes for 18 yards and a score.

Tight end Travis Kelce finished with three receptions for 71 yards. Rookie running back Emmett Johnson had two receptions for 44 yards and rushed for 24 yards on eight carries.

Rashee Rice had two receptions for 19 yards and a score.

The Chiefs forced two turnovers, including an interception by rookie Mansoor Delane, who injured his shoulder on the play. Defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah had a sack and forced fumble. Chris Jones recovered a fumble.

Kansas City's defense recorded three sacks and allowed 176 yards.

The Chiefs (1-0) host the Indianapolis Colts (0-1) next Sunday on Sunday Night Football.
