Body recovered from Smithville Lake Tuesday
SMITHVILLE, Mo. (KQTV) -- The Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Platte County Sheriff's Office said a body and a vehicle were recovered from Smithville Lake Tuesday.
The Platte County Sheriff's Office said around 8 a.m., it received information that a vehicle associated with an ongoing Sheriff's Office missing person investigation was possibly in the waters of Smithville Lake near the Crows Creek boat ramp.
The search of the area has previously been initiated as part of the missing person investigation conducted by the Sheriff's Office.
According to MSHP Troop A Corporal Justin Ewing, MSHP's Dive Team was called in, and arrived on scene at 10 a.m. and completed the recovery around 2:30 p.m.
"It's pretty common for our Dive Team to be called in for situations like this all across the state...we're always, in the sequence of events, as far as investigations unfold, we're honestly usually the last ones to be notified, because we're requested after the investigation's been done," Ewing said.
The Platte County Sheriff's Office said when the dive team hit the water, they confirmed that the vehicle was associated with the missing person's case and that there was a deceased individual found inside.
The deceased individual is believed to be the party from the original missing person's report, but was transported to the medical examiner's office to assist in identification.
Until identification is made and the family is notified, the Platte County Sheriff's Office said the deceased person's identity will not be released.
The Sheriff's Office said, currently, foul play is not suspected.
"I commend the hard work and investigative hours that the detectives assigned to this case ut in over the past three months and appreciated the assistance provided by the outside agencies involved, particularly the Clay County Sheriff's Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol," Platte County Sheriff Erik Holland said.
The incident is currently being investigated by the Platte County Sheriff's Office and is ongoing.
KQ2 will provide updates as they become available.
