Washburn upends Griffons’ upset bid in MIAA Tournament semifinals
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KQTV)— MoWest led Washburn for more than 33 minutes in the MIAA Tournament semifinals on Saturday, but when the final horn sounded, it was the Ichabods celebrating.
3-seed Washburn defeated #7 MoWest, 67-63, in the MIAA Women's Basketball Tournament Saturday afternoon inside Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City.
The Griffons jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter and turned that lead into a 15-9 advantage after the first quarter.
MoWest was able to keep its lead throughout the second quarter and took an eight-point lead into halftime, 33-25.
In the third quarter, MoWest held a 16-point lead, 46-30, with 5:14 to play, but the Ichabods cut into that lead. The Griffons to an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter, 53-45, but Washburn outscored MoWest, 22-10, in the final 10 minutes to halt the upset bid.
The Ichabods' 67-33 victory sends them to the MIAA Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon to take on top-seed Central Missouri at 1 p.m.
