St. Joseph City Council delays Hyde Park Pool vote again, approves tuition discount for city employees
ST. JOSEPH, Mo (KQTV) -- The St. Joseph City Council postponed the vote on the construction of Hyde Park Pool for a second time.
The City Council postponed the vote at its last meeting. The bill would approve $4.32 million for the construction of Hyde pool and the pool house at Hyde Park.
The project would include a zero-depth entry shallow water activity pool on the site of the former Hyde Pool. In addition, renovations would provide modernized community rooms, updated concession space and improved staff and operational areas.
St. Joseph City Manager, Mike Schumacher said when making decisions the involve million dollars everyone wants a high level of comfort.
"That's exactly what we're after. Where going keep continue to explore that question and come back with an answer for council," he said.
The council plans to vote on the bill at the end of April.
The council approved a bill allowing the city to enter into an agreement with Missouri Western State University to provide discounted tuition for city employees and their families.
Full-time city employees will receive a 20% tuition discount. Their spouses and children also will be eligible for the discount. It will apply only to certain undergraduate and graduate programs at Missouri Western.
St. Joseph Assistant City Manager, Dawn Lanning said Missouri Western has been a great partner at ensuring continuing education in St. Joseph.
"Which was able to assist some of our employees with finishing or starting their education and Missouri Western has really come to the table to kind of close that gap with a tuition discount," she said.
The bill will go into effect on April 1.
The council approved to terminate an agreement between the City, the 36th and Frederick Community Improvement District and 3502 Frederick Ave.
The agreement was approve back in 2018, but development never happened. The property was sold to a new owner in 2025.
The 36th and Frederick Community Improvement District was terminated and fully dissolved by Special Ordinance No. 10776, passed on Feb. 2, 2026.
The next city council meeting will be on April 13.
