Maryville Public Safety warns of text message, QR code scams

File

MARYVILLE, Mo. (KQTV) -- The Maryville Police Department is alerting residents to multiple scams involving unexpected packages and text messages.

In a post on social media, Maryville Public Safety said some residents are receiving packages with inexpensive items inside. A note in the package encourages the resident to scan a QR code to find out who sent the "gift."

Other residents have received text messages claiming they owe unpaid fines for things such as traffic tickets or toll fees. The messages contain generic information and are sent in bulk, according to Maryville police.

Police warn these are scams and residents should not click on any link or scan QR codes.

Police advise residents to delete suspicious messages and report them as spam. Residents should also dispose of any unexpected or suspicious package contents.
