Local organization celebrates 35 years of service

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The St. Joseph Youth Alliance celebrated 35 years of service with an open house on Tuesday evening.

Visitors were able to see all the programs the youth organization offers, meet the staff, meet the youth that the program serves and enjoy snacks.

Robin Hammond, executive director of the St. Joseph Youth Alliance, said this is a great milestone for the non-profit.

"For us, it's a great opportunity to reflect on a number of young people that we've been able to impact over the past 35 years, but to also look forward to the next 35 years and beyond," she said. "What opportunities lie ahead for us and the potential for services for young people and the number of people we can impact."

The Youth Alliance's services have been needed now, more than ever, due to the effects of social media and different substances being more available.

"It really has led to an increase in bullying and an impact on mental health. Those in turn impact substance use and I think the legalization of marijuana has also impacted our young people," she said. "Increase prevalence in vaping, these are bigger issues that really impact our young people and their success and meeting their goals."

With obstacles to overcome, Hammond said the best way to support the youth is to uplift them and make them feel supported.

"To let them know that they have a safe place and they have people that care about them. That could be here at the Youth Alliance, or that could be individuals in their neighborhood," she said. "A caring person that can really show them that they have value and it really does make a big difference."

The St. Joseph Youth Alliance assists kids all the way into adulthood with different resources being made available to help with their success.

"We can provide them with mentorships, education and training. Help them achieve their high school equivalency. There are a lot of opportunities here to volunteer to the community and give back to help prevent substance use in young people," Hammond said. "There is a wide range of things we do. Ultimately, we want young people to be successful and contributing members to society. We're here to help overcome those barriers they may be facing."

Hammond said the Youth Alliance is always seeking donations consisting of time, talents and even monetary donations. Community members looking to lend a helping hand can reach out to the organization to help.

Anyone interested in reaching out to the St. Joseph Youth Alliance can call 816-232-0050.

Overall, Hammond said she looks forward to the next 35 years for the organization.
