Residents question proposed annexation near SE Pickett Road

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The St. Joseph City Council hosted a public hearing during Monday night's meeting about considering voluntary annexation of the property located at 6321 SE Pickett Road.

The property owner, Capstone Technology Campus LLC, wants the land added to the St. Joseph city limits. The proposed voluntary annexation will include the real property at the address and the roads located on and adjacent to the property.

The annexation of the roads has been requested by Buchanan County, Missouri. During the meeting, a few residents spoke out at the public hearing.

City Manager Mike Schumacher said the City was contacted by the property owners about the annexation into the city.

"The city didn't initiate the conversation; the owner of the property did," he said.

St. Joseph resident Mary Kottenstette opposes the annexation after city officials told her they had not received any development plans from the property owners.

"Well, without that, I would certainly not be in favor," she said.

St. Joseph resident Kendra Ezzell said she wants to know the company’s plans before the property is annexed into the city.

"I think there is a lot of questions that need to be answered before you would say, yeah, let's annex this and let's make it part of the city, because does it make sense?" she said.

The City must wait 14 days before taking legislative action. City Council is expected to vote on the annexation at its June 22 meeting.
