Kansas City man dies after arrest in Buchanan County

BUCHANAN COUNTY, Mo. (KQTV) -- A Kansas City, Kan. man died after being taken into custody in Buchanan County on Thursday, May 28.

According to the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office, just before noon, the Sheriff's Office received a call of rolling domestic in the area of US 59 and 45 highways. The call would later be changed to a check for trouble call.

Deputies located a red Dodge Ram in a business parking lot near the intersection of US 59 and 45 highways.

According to a news release, there was an active disturbance between a man, 36-year-old Marcus Alan Caldwell of Kansas City, Kan., and his mother.

Caldwell appeared to be agitated and his behavior was erratic, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation. While attempting to handcuff Caldwell, he allegedly punched a deputy in the face and began fighting with the deputies.

The news release states that Caldwell then grabbed a deputy's gun and tried to remove it from its holster.

Deputies were able to get Caldwell on the ground and handcuffed.

Deputies sat Caldwell up and assessed him, including putting water on his neck to cool him down.

During this time Caldwell appeared to suffer a medical event and stopped breathing.

Deputies and Buchanan County EMS began performing life saving measures. Caldwell was transported to Mosaic Life Care where life saving measures continued.

The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office reports Caldwell did not survive the medical event.

The investigation is ongoing and an autopsy is scheduled for Friday, May 29.
