Local World War II veteran celebrates 100th birthday

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- A local World War II veteran celebrated his 100th birthday over the weekend.

U.S. Navy Gunner's mate third-class Efren Martinez turned 100-years old on Monday. Martinez's family put together a party for him, so his friends and family could come together to celebrate his birthday.

Martinez served in the Navy during World War II on an aircraft carrier. He said that he experienced combat at Okinawa, Japan and Iwo Jima.

After he served in the Navy, he returned home to St. Joseph and eventually spent his professional life working for the United States Postal Service.

When Martinez was asked if he had any secrets to living a long, healthy life, he said that his faith plays a huge role in his life, but it's also about being active.

"Keep moving the best you can," Martinez said. "And eat well."

Martinez received special letters from the military and a letter from President Donald Trump for his 100th birthday.
