Officials: Residents can return home following evacuation hazmat spill on I-29 in Holt County

HOLT COUNTY, Mo. (KQTV) -- Residents who live within one mile of a hazmat spill on Interstate 29 in Holt County can return to their homes, according to law enforcement officials and first responders.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Shane Hux told KQ2 this afternoon that fire officials cleared the one-mile area around mile marker 80 in Holt County for residents to return home.

Emergency management crews evacuated the area Thursday morning following a crash involving a tractor-trailer transporting sulfuric acid suspended with nitroglycerin.

"The Department of Natural Resources was notified of the hazardous material incident," Hux said. "They have contracted with Clean Harbors Environmental Services Inc. out of Kansas City to assist with the cleanup."

Hux said the tractor-trailer was carrying 4,000 pounds of sulfuric acid suspended with nitroglycerin.

I-29 is shut down for several miles between Mound City and Oregon.

Vehicles traveling north on I-29 will exit onto U.S. 59 south of Mound City, Missouri. They will travel on U.S. 59 to Mound City, where they will re-enter I-29.

Vehicles traveling south will exit at Mound City onto Missouri Route 118 and travel east to Route PP. They will travel south on Route PP to U.S. 159 and go east. Vehicles will re-enter I-29 at U.S. 59.
