ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce and community leaders joined Bryan Properties to celebrate the groundbreaking of its new apartment complex.
Bryan Properties is a property company based in Springfield, Missouri, and is spearheading the project.
The apartment complex is located on 5408 North Point Road near the YMCA at the Shoppes at North Village. This will be the first new apartment complex built in St. Joseph in 22 years.
Bryan Properties was introduced to St. Joseph market by city manager, Mike Schumacher and they understand that was a desperate need for housing in the area.
"Not just to support the community but for the local businesses here. As we kinda dug deeper and deeper it just got amplified on how underserve the community was," said Brad Gebhard, Bryan Properties chief executive officer.
The name of the apartment community, Westward Pointe, was chosen to honor St. Joseph's history as home to the first fast mail across the country from the Missouri River to the Pacific coast.
Gebhard said Westward Pointe will help local employers attract and retain employees in St. Joseph.
"Working with Mosaic and the other industries in town, Herzog as well visiting with them they we're using housing that's maybe an hour away for their staff," he said. "They had desparte need for this and we're serving that purpose."
