ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) is commemorating the anniversary of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence.

The first time the Declaration was read aloud publicly was on July 8, 1776.

To celebrate this, the SAR is hosting a reading of the document at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, on the south patio of City Hall.

The James Smith Talbot Chapter will participate in the public reading. Members of the chapter, some in colonial military uniforms, will read the entirety of the Declaration.

The public is welcome to attend, and the event is expected to last 15 to 20 minutes.

The James Smith Talbot Chapter was chartered in July 2024 by the Missouri Society of Sons of the American Revolution.

The SAR honors our Revolutionary War patriot ancestors by promoting patriotism, serving communities and educating and inspiring future generations.
