Clipper Distribution Co. to donate pet oxygen mask kits to the SJFD

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- In honor of National Pet Fire Safety Day, Clipper Distribution Company will donate 12 pet oxygen mask kits to the St. Joseph Fire Department.

Approximately 500,000 pets are affected by house fires each year, and 40,000 die, most from smoke inhalation, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Unlike a standard human oxygen mask, the pet masks are specifically designed to fit the unique facial structure of small animals. Allowing firefighters to provide more effective care.

Currently, the SJFD operates 12 frontline units, but only two have pet oxygen mask kits, both of which are over 20 years old.

This donation will provide every frontline unit with updated equipment. This will significantly expand the department's ability to respond to pet-related emergencies.

"Just today (Monday), crews revived two kittens trapped in a kennel during a house fire," Assistant Fire Chief Jamey McVicker said. "They were given supplemental oxygen via an adult non-rebreather mask and are currently recovering. Our firefighters take every emergency response to heart and are committed to doing everything they can to improve the outcome for everyone involved. By equipping them with better tools, they are able to perform their duties more effectively. There is nothing worse than feeling more could have been done, and this equipment provided another valuable resource."

With this donation, Clipper continues to support efforts to save animals and improve lives.

The pet oxygen mask kits will be presented to the St. Joseph Fire Department during a special presentation recognizing National Pet Fire Safety Day at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, at 401 S. 7th St.
