Pony Express Museum takes part in annual Free Museum Day

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- As the Museums Association of St. Joseph prepares to host its annual Free Museum Day, the Pony Express Museum is "saddling up" to showcase what it has to offer.

The free admission day will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Pony School, located at 1219 South 9th St.

The museum said it will showcase its Pony School, a one-room schoolhouse constructed to 1860s standards. Schoolmarms will teach short lessons, much as they were presented in that time period.

“Join us at Pony School for a unique learning experience as taught by experienced schoolmarms. We’ll also teach Spencerian script, an elegant, lightweight style of cursive handwriting developed in the US by Platt Rogers Spencer in the early 1830s. It’s this style schoolmarms taught in the 1860s," Executive Director Cindy Daffron said in a news release. "This session will be followed by games popular at the time, because what would a school day be without games?!”

Attendees will be able to experience class with a schoolmarm from 10 to 10:30 a.m., 10:30 to 11 a.m., 1 to 1:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 2 p.m.

Handwriting will take place from 11 to 11:30 a.m. and 2 to 2:30 p.m. Games will take place from 11:30 a.m. to noon and 2:30 to 3 p.m.
