3 injured after tractor-trailer carrying hazardous materials overturns on I-29 in Holt County

HOLT COUNTY, Mo. (KQTV) -- A tractor-trailer driver and occupant suffered minor injuries, while the driver of a passenger vehicle sustained moderate injuries after a crash Thursday morning.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop H received a report of a motor vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 29 at the 80-mile marker in Holt County at 1:51 a.m.

The tractor-trailer traveled off the southbound lanes, jackknifed and overturned. The tractor-trailer was transporting sulfuric acid suspended with nitroglycerin.

Approximately 30 residences were evacuated by the Mound City Rural Fire Department as a precautionary safety measure. The residents have been authorized to return to their residences Thursday afternoon.

The tractor came to rest on its wheels in the median. The towed unit overturned onto its driver's side and came to rest on the southbound lanes.

A secondary crash happened as a southbound passenger vehicle struck the towed unit in the southbound driving lane.

The driver of the passenger vehicle sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

The detour will remain in place for an undetermined amount of time as HazMat crews work with the Department of Natural Resources to address the hazardous materials.
