Public invited to comemorate Congressman Jerry Litton

CHILLICOTHE, Mo. (KQTV) -- Plans are underway for an event aimed to honor the life of late Congressman Jerry Litton and his family.

The "Litton Legacy of Dreams" event will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 2, at the Litton Agri-Science Learning Center located at 10780 Livingston County Road 235 in Chillicothe, Missouri, where the Litton family lived.

The public is invited to begin arriving at 2 p.m., and a special program will begin at 3 p.m. in the Jenkins Building.

The event will be co-sponsored by the Jerry Litton Family Memorial Foundation, the University of Missouri- Columbia and its College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR).

A special feature program will be an 18-minute video featuring Congressman Litton, late broadcaster Walter Cronkite and others.

Ed Turner, campaign manager and chief of staff for Litton, and the current president of the Litton Foundation, will serve as the emcee for the program to mark the 50th Anniversary of the death of Congressman Litton and his family.

Turner will also provide a brief history of the Foundation and its body of work, as well as the purpose and utility of the Litton Learning Center.

University of Missouri System president Mun Choi is expected to speak. Other speakers will include graduates of the Missouri Agricultural Leadership of Tomorrow and the MU Litton Scholars program.

Litton Legacy of Dreams is open to the public, but RSVPs are requested and needed. RSVPs can be sent via the website at www.littonfoundation.com.

The event will serve as a reflection and celebration of Congressman Litton and his accomplishments. Litton, at the time of his passing on Aug. 3, 1976, was the two-term U.S. Congressman from the state's Sixth District and had just won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.

The event will also showcase the Litton Agri-Science Learning Center, a multi-purpose campus planned and built by the late Mildred Litton, Jerry's mother, and others.
