ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- Spire is revitalizing the Lions Baseball Field Friday morning as part of its "Day for Good" program.

Spire’s Day for Good program gives the company a chance to give back to the communities it serves, offering employees eight hours of paid time off to volunteer with a nonprofit of their choice.

The Lions baseball field will undergo improvements including tree trimming, power washing, flower bed renewal, fence repairs, weed and trash removal, batting cage repairs and more.

Hunter Gibson, Spire service technician said it's a huge benefit to give back to the community.

"These kids that will utilize this field and get the opportunity to play, and have a nice place to come will be a big accomplishment," he said. "Something that's very rewarding to me personally."

Gibson said he believes all Spire employees should have the opportunity to volunteer if they have the time.

"Getting that opportunity as well as being offered it from Spire is something that is very beneficial to all of us," he said. "It will allow us to continue to improve our community and help one another out."

Gibson said he hopes fans and players will enjoy coming the clean environment anmd having a nice place for the children to play.

"Should really allow the season to grow as well as continue to keep improving these children," he said.

Along with Spire, C&M Grounds Care assisted with improvements to the Lions baseball field, handling mowing, aerating, seeding and trimming.

Braden Humphreys said he wanted to help give back to the community.

"Help fix up this field, it was looking bad there for a little while," he said. "What better way to do that than to come here and help them."

Humphreys said it's important for the kids to have a nice field to play on and the parents have somewhere to sit and watch.

"You know it's just overall a better place to be when it's cleaned up, kept up and nice maintenance do to it," he said.

Gibson said volunteering provides growth and helps meet needs they don’t always have time to address.

"With us being able to take the time away from work and offer this help, this assistance to a place that is needing it, is going to be a huge improvement to the community," he said. "It allow us to take a little more pride in our community."

Overall, Gibson hopes the improvements benefit the community and all the ball players.
