Savannah partners with businesses to replace sidewalks around square

SAVANNAH, Mo. (KQTV) -- Visitors to Savannah's square may have noticed sidewalk construction around local businesses.

This project has been in development for a few years, according to Savannah City Administrator Brooke Bell.

Whenever the city went out to bid last fall, with the project limited to sidewalks around City Hall, business owners were asked if they wanted to join in.

Bell told KQ2 the sidewalks were last done in the 1990s with the help of a Neighborhood Improvement District tax, the cost of which was paid back to the city through the businesses within 20 years.

Bell shared that multiple businesses joined in, and Proffer Concrete Construction began its work over the past two weeks.

With the city also home to Andrew County's courthouse and government, it's a point of special pride to make sure the area around it is kept up as well as possible.

"We actually get a lot of complaints on (the sidewalks). So just to hear now the people saying, 'Hey, it's getting done,'" Bell shared. "Just having the businesses be excited for residents to come, walk the square."

Eight businesses are involved with the city in this $41,000 project so far. Proffer Construction is expected to complete the projects within the next two weeks.
