Chiefs rookies finish out open practice

ST. JOSEPH, Mo (KQTV) -- Monday was another hot day for the Kansas City Chiefs rookies and Quarterbacks as they took to the practice field at Missouri Western State University.

Star Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was absent from training on Monday morning, but the rest of the team was hard at work drilling at practice.

Several undrafted players expressed their excitement about the opportunity to join the NFL.

One of them was EJ Smith, son of three-time Super Bowl Champion Emmitt Smith.

"I'm very grateful for the opportunity," Smith said. "Just being out here and being able to practice with these guys and getting better every day, it's a blessing for sure."

Smith shared the comparisons being made about his journey to the NFL, compared to his father.

"Y'all know who my dad is. He was a first-rounder; I'm an undrafted guy," Smith said. "As a kid, my dad always told me to build my own legacy."

Even though many of the athletes on the field are going into their first year, they are expected to uphold the team's reputation.

"Nothing is given to nobody," Rookie Wide Receiver Andrew Armstrong said. "So I knew that I was gonna have to come in here and do the best that I can. Be the best player I can on and off the field."

Chiefs training camp will be open to season ticket holders starting on Wednesday, July 29th.
