KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KQTV) -- "Build it, and they will come," is something that rings true for the Kansas City Royals and the Boston Red Sox, as they look to play at an iconic baseball location in 2027.

MLB and Universal Pictures announced Friday that the Royals would face the Red Sox next year in a uniquely special stadium in Dyersville, Iowa.

The MLB at Field of Dreams Game has been a special experience for players and fans since the inaugural contest was played between the White Sox and Yankees in 2021, where Chicago won the game with a walk-off home run.

The Cubs and Reds faced off in Dyserville with the Cubs winning 4-2.

The festivities took a four-year hiatus from 2022 through 2026 for the construction of a new stadium on the movie site.

The game, inspired by the 1989 film "Field of Dreams," starring Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones and Ray Liotta, has been complemented with special pregame and in-game festivities since its inception.

“We are thrilled to showcase our athletes through one of Major League Baseball’s most cherished events and help to grow the game to a worldwide audience,” said Royals president of business operations Cullen Maxey. “Royals territory already covers the Midwest, including Dyersville, so this is a natural fit that provides Royals fans a chance to cheer on the home team in a magical setting.”

The game will be at home for the Royals on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2027, with Aug. 13 being an off day and the series resuming against Boston on Saturday, Aug. 14, at Kauffman Stadium.

NBC Sports will also provide exclusive national coverage of the game in Dyersville.
