MoWest football ready to ‘prove everyone wrong’

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- Missouri Western State University's football team is set for its season opener against the Augustana Vikings.

MoWest has added 55 new players this offseason with transfers and incoming freshmen. Griffon Head Coach Tyler Fenwick went on the Griffon Insider Podcast and spoke on what this offseason has been like.

"I think the work has been good," said Fenwick. "Having so many faces, you're sitting there and you're trying to figure out what makes each kid tick. From a coach's standpoint, that's been a lot of fun."

Junior Rickie Dunn is entering his third season with MoWest and talked about the importance of making the new guys feel at home.

"We've been welcoming our guys with open arms," said Dunn. "We are making sure that we're there for anything they need."

Junior Evan Williams has had the same mindset and believes his new teammates have brought everyone together.

"I think it's built a lot of camaraderie with the team," said Williams. "Getting new people changes some things up and gives a different perspective on how they view it coming in."

In July, the MIAA released the preseason polls from coaches and the media.

The Griffons ranked ninth in the coaches poll and the media poll. Williams didn't appreciate the rankings and is now motivated going into the season.

"The preseason rankings came out, and it was just like completely disrespectful," said Williams. "Seeing that just...just gives you something to fight for. You look at that and you're like, 'man, I can't believe somebody would say that.' We're gonna go ahead and prove them wrong."

Dunn isn't worried about what other people have to say. He knows what he has in the locker room and is ready to show it on the field.

"Honestly, we see ourselves up at the very top," said Dunn. "No matter what the outside says, we are those guys, and we're going to prove everybody that."

MoWest will open up their season at home at Spratt Memorial Stadium, with kickoff at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 27, against Augustana.
