Andrew County Sheriff’s Office urges caution while traveling on gravel roads following rain

Darren Doyle | KQ2

ANDREW COUNTY, Mo. (KQTV) -- A large amount of rainfall from Thursday night has the Andrew County Sheriff's Office urging caution to drivers as they travel on gravel roads.

In a Facebook post, the Sheriff's Office said, "Due to the large amount of rainfall we have received and with additional rain possible throughout the weekend and into next week, we have experienced several roadway washouts and drainage tube failures."

The conditions have also created large openings in some roadways, and several roadways still have water flowing over them.

"Turn Around, Don't Drown" is the mantra the Sheriff's Office tells residents to listen to as they're driving during and after large rainfall events.

"Never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. It only takes a small amount of moving water to sweep a vehicle off the road," the post said.

Drivers who encounter roadway damage, washouts, flooded roads or other hazards are encouraged to contact the Andrew County Road and Bridge Department at 816-324-4012 or Andrew County Dispatch at 816-324-4114 and press 1.

The Sheriff's Office also said it was busy responding to numerous reports of flash flooding across the county Thursday night. While doing so, there were some locations that could not be safely accessed.
