KQ2 Sports’ sit-down interview with St. Joseph Mustangs’ and Johnson County Community College baseball player, Boston Bruce
BRETT KENNEDY: "How is your first year going with the Mustang so far over the past couple of games?"
BOSTON BRUCE: "It's been great. Had a pretty good start so far. It's been nice to get to know all the guys and hang out in the clubhouse. I came up last night on an off day and got to hang out with some of the guys. So it's been really fun getting to know everybody and spend time with everyone."
KENNEDY: "Now you're an Atchison guy, an Atchison High School alum. Did you come to these games growing up?"
BRUCE: So I think I came to about one or two with my uncle when I was pretty little, but I never really came to a ton growing up, but I've always heard about it. There's a lot of guys that I've played with who have played here and always had good things to say about it."
KENNEDY: "What's it been like just playing at Phil Welch so far, seeing the crowds?"
BRUCE: "Just getting to experience this stadium, it's been really cool. It's a really nice stadium and just having as many fans as they do every game, it's been really cool, especially to see with it being summer ball and everything. Even with the first day I was here I think we got rained out towards the end and there were still a lot of, a lot of fans here, so that was really cool."
KENNEDY: "We gotta ask about Johnson County Community College. You just finished an insane year with them, that massive win streak you guys had. Top it off with the NJCAA College World Series championship, first in school history. What was it like just being a part of all that?"
BRUCE: "It was awesome. We had such a great group of guys and it was a family there. It's a great culture and it's just something that you always looked forward to showing up to the field every day, showing up to the locker room every day. Knowing that we had that group, that family, it was awesome and obviously we're a great team. But the thing that I'll remember most, it's just the time that we were all able to spend together, days off, after games, bus rides, stuff like that."
KENNEDY: "What made you guys so good? Was it the bond you guys had?"
BRUCE: "Yeah, I definitely say the bond. Obviously our coach did a great job of recruiting great players and helping us develop as players, but the tightness of the group I think is what made us so special. Everybody believing in one another and knowing that you can trust the guy next to you and going out and playing for the guy next to you is what made it so special."
KENNEDY: "They like to win championships here with the Mustangs as well. I'm sure you've heard the team is going for its 11th Mink League championship. That would be a record if that were to happen. If it does, and you were here to be a part of that, how cool would that be? What a year for you!"
BRUCE: "It'd be really special. It'd be really cool, obviously winning the national championship was awesome, but going and rolling it into summer would be really cool too, especially with all these fans that are here. It's really awesome to see everybody out here and play in front of this crowd."
KENNEDY: "From what you've seen from this roster so far with the Mustangs, what do you like about it?
BRUCE: "Everybody just plays loose and has fun, has a good time. In the clubhouse, on the field, in the dugout, and most of the time in the summer from where I've played before this, it's just kind of about showing up, getting reps, not always about winning. But these guys care about winning, they wanna win and it's really fun to be in the dugout with a group of guys like that."
KENNEDY: "What do you want Mustangs fans to know about you? What's your play style like?"
BRUCE: "I play hard, like to have a lot of fun. Just go out there and play hard, have a good time, cheer on the boys, have fun in the dugout."
