Argentina defeats Switzerland in extra time in World Cup Quarterfinals in final tournament game in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KQTV) - The final World Cup tournament game that Kansas City hosted was filled with drama right to the very end as defending World Cup champion Argentina defeated Switzerland 3-1 in extra time.

Argentina struck first just 10 minutes into the game as Alexis Mcallister got a header into the net on a corner kick and a 1-0 Argentina lead.

The Swiss made things interesting in the 70th minute in the second half when Dan Ndoye scored Switzerlands first goal of the game to tie the game at 1-1.

Switzerlands Breel Embolo was sent off in the second half with a red card for a simulation foul and Switzerland had to play the rest of the game with 10 men.

That was big because the game went into extra time and the defending champions struck in the second period of extra time on a long sailing kick into the net from Julian Alvarez to break the tie and then Argentina added another goal from Lautaro Martinez to seal the victory for good.

"(Switzerland) made us struggle physically, they're a very strong squad. It was very difficult for us to win the duels to try and put five or six passes together," said Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni. "But ultimately we always find the solutions. I knew the World Cup was going to be very tough and now we're into the semifinals and that's thanks to the players. They had to trust in the process."

"The way we play futbol makes us incredibly proud. We were proud of todays performance. I think we dominated today for the most part against the reigning champion," said Switzerland head coach Murat Yakin. "It goes to show that Argentina took us very seriously and we were able to create many problems. Obviously I can't buy myself anything with that but we can be very proud of ourselves."

Argentina heads back to the World Cup Semifinals and will face England in Atlanta, Georgia on Wednesday, July 15th at 2 pm.
