Mid-Buchanan volleyball’s valiant effort falls just short in 5 set thriller to New Covenant Academy in the Class 2 State Semis

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) - The Mid-Buchanan High School volleyball team gave all it had Wednesday night against the #1 team in Class 2, New Covenant Academy. But it was not enough, as Mid-Buchanan falls just short in the Class 2 State Semifinals, 3-2 (10-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-27, 12-15).

The Lady Dragons seemed to find the team's groove after falling in the first set, Mid-Buchanan won the next 2 sets to take a 2-1 lead. But the Lady Warriors of New Covenant Academy matched Mid-Buch blow for blow in the next two sets and eventually emerged victorious.

It was a valiant effort from Ron Underwood's team in a game the school had never reached before this season.

"We just decided that since we're here, we just will play our best and not what we just did in Set 1, which was probably as poor as we had passed and hit all year. We played timid and timid won't work against New Covenant," said Mid-Buchanan head coach Ron Underwood. But we don't quit and more people got to see that tonight against a really good team."

Mid-Buchanan suffers just its second defeat all season at 38-2, the Lady Dragons will now take on Liberty (Mountain View) in the Class 2 Third Place Game on Thursday, November 5th at 6 pm at the Civic Arena.

"It's a pride thing. Nobody wants to finish the season with two losses after one loss for the whole season. So they want to go out in the last one doing well," said Underwood.
