Kansas City Chiefs get overtime victory over Indianapolis to improve to 2-0 on the season
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KQTV) - For the second straight season at Arrowhead Stadium, overtime was needed to decide a game between the Indianapolis Colts and Kansas City Chiefs. For the second straight year, KC would also emerge victorious as the team comes away with a 33-30 victory.
It was a back-and-forth game throughout. Patrick Mahomes finished 32-of-47 through the air for 382 yards and 3 touchdowns. Travis Kelce caught 9 passes for 101 yards and 1 touchdown. Kelce passed Marshall Faulk Sunday night for most yards after catch in a career.
"It's pretty freaking cool, man, to be in the talks with Marshall Faulk, Larry Fitz, Terrell Owens. That's some pretty cool stuff," said Kelce. "Those are the guys that I grew up watching. I don't mean to make Larry feel old, but he was my first college football game I ever saw, so guys like that fueled my love for this game. So to be in the same talks as them or to be accomplishing something that a feat that they did, that's pretty cool."
The Chiefs spread the wealth in the passing game around Sunday night, Tyquan Thornton caught 4 passes for 86 yards, Rashee Rice with 4 catches for 86 yards and Kenneth Walker 6 passes for 61 yards including a key 22 yard catch and run to put Kansas City in game winning field goal range in overtime.
Walker finished with 186 yards of total offense, including 117 yards rushing on 24 carries.
"You can see what the defense is doing, you know how they play. So definitely I feel like I get stronger game by game and you know the way we condition, it makes it a lot easier in the game," said Walker.
Jalen Royals also got in the scoring action as the second year receiver caught the first touchdown of his pro career on a one yard bootleg from Mahomes on 4th and goal in the third quarter.
"I was the back read and came over and I saw Noah (Gray), but you know I didn't know if Pat (Mahomes) knew, so I just went and caught it and it was a touchdown," said Royals. "Always your first touchdown is the best touchdown. So it's amazing."
Kicker Harrison Butker, who missed a field goal earlier in the game, drilled a 40 yarder right down the middle to win the game in overtime for the Chiefs.
"To have the butterflies and the nerves on game days and have game winning kicks, that's why you play football, especially as a kicker," said Butker. "It makes you feel alive and I love it. I don't like it, but then I do, when you do well after the game."
The Chiefs improve to 2-0 on the season and now have the team's first road game as KC heads to play in Florida against the Miami Dolphins in week 3 on Sunday, September 27th at noon.
