Saturday at Chiefs Training Camp: Patrick Mahomes gives update on knee status, Emmett Johnson looking forward to first preseason game

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) - Saturday was the sixth day in a row the Kansas City Chiefs had Training Camp practice on MoWest's campus in St. Joseph.

QB1 Patrick Mahomes spoke to the media for the first time since training camp got underway. Number 15 gave an update on how his knee feels so far at camp, as well as his mindset heading into the upcoming preseason games for the Chiefs as he begins year 10 in the NFL.

"(The knee) feels great, just pushing every single day, trying to stack days together. I feel like when you're tired sometimes you don't even think about it. I'm trying to protect it, but at the same time I'm trying to push it and get myself ready to go for the season," said Mahomes. "I'm going to prepare to play (the first preseason game). (Andy Reid) hasn't told me anything, so I'll prepare to play and prepare to get myself ready, and we'll see where we go from there. If not, I'll be as locked in as I am during the game. It's about just learning how to play with what I got, and I feel like I'm able to move and do the things that I can. We're gonna keep pushing it and see where I can get it so I can hopefully get that okay to go out there and play week one."

Chiefs 5th-round draft pick, rookie running back Emmett Johnson looks forward to playing his first ever game at Arrowhead Stadium next weekend, and he's locked in to make sure his opportunities count and to prove himself to this coaching staff.

"Just getting out there and winning the football game first of all, but just attacking every rep that I get," said Johnson. "Whatever opportunity I get, making the most out of it, and just showing coach (Reid) that he can rely on me as well as the other players on the team."

Linebacker. Jack Cochrane re-signed with Kansas City in the offseason, beginning his 5th NFL season in red and white. Cochrane may be asked to do more on defense this season with Leo Chenal now gone. Cochrane has experience playing all three linebacker positions, which makes him super useful in Steve Spagnolo's defense.

"It's kind of been my role the last few years, and it's whatever I can do to help the team," said Cochrane. "So if that means going in and playing sam, will, mike, just however I can help. I take a lot of pride in being able to kind of play each of those spots and do well."

The Chiefs will have an off-day on Sunday, August 9th before practicing again on Monday the 10th. We're now just one week away from Kansas City's first preseason game as KC will host the Los Angeles Rams in Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday, August 15th at 3 pm.
