St. Joseph Mustangs’ infielder Jayden Little talks to KQ2 about season starting and team’s outlook
Brett Kennedy: "Mustangs baseball is back in Saint Joseph Baseball back in the area. Hard to believe it's already here. Joining with me now is Jaden Little, Lafayette High School alum. How excited are you that baseball season is back and, uh, we can actually enjoy some baseball here at Phil Welch?"
Jayden Little: "I was super stoked. I'd finished up my college season a few weeks back, just kind of been sitting around, not doing a whole lot. I've been kind of at the edge of my seat ready to play ball again. So it's nice to be back here in Saint Joe playing."
Brett: "Just being a local guy. This is your final year here playing for the team, how much fun has this time been here for you?"
Jayden: "Just reflecting on all the years, it just gets better and better each year. You kind of build on the talent from the year before and you kind of build on all the guys each year and see some turnover. It's a little different this year, not so much turnover, but even with all the new guys, we just enjoy each other's company and just have such a good time."
Brett: "How's the team looking this year? Every Mustang's team is different. What do you think and what do you like about this year's group?"
Jayden: "We've got a lot of talent still. I know opening night loss isn't really what we're looking for, but we have some new guys. So you have to get the nerves out early. Everybody's dealt with it here. I know everybody knows what we're talking about when we say it's a little different playing in front of three thousand people. But I know these guys will lock into it and we'll be just fine. We got plenty of talent, plenty of talent you guys need to come see, so I'm super excited for the year."
Brett: "You being one of the veterans on this year's team, a lot of new faces on this roster, like you said, what advice have you been giving these guys about playing for the Mustangs and just playing in front of these big crowds?"
Jayden: "I think the main thing is just enjoy it. Like at the end of the day, you're playing baseball in front of all these people. Like you really can't wish for much else. We all still want to win at the end of the day. I'm not saying we're taking away from that, but just enjoy being here. It's such a great environment. We don't get the chance to do this at college. Just enjoy being here. Enjoy the fans. Enjoy being the guy, all these little kids want your autograph. Just enjoy that above all else and all the rest on the field to work itself out."
BRETT: "As you know, I gotta ask about number eleven. You guys on the Mustangs are going for the team's eleventh MINK League championship. That would be a record. I know it's a long ways off, but just to even have that opportunity, how cool is that for you guys?"
Jayden: "It's special to me because this would be my third, I believe, in four years here. So it's something that I'm really looking forward to, something I'm really pushing to try to win. At the end of the day, it's early, just trying to get better each day right now, worrying about postseason when it comes. Right now, I just want to build on talent each day, get better and better each day, and it'll work all work itself out in the end."
Brett: "Years from now, when you look back on your time playing here, what will you remember most about playing at Phil Welch and for the Mustangs?"
Jayden: "Definitely the environment man. I'll never be able to replicate anything like this, coming out here and playing in front of three thousand, four thousand, even up to seven thousand people at one time. It's just something that I'll never forget and something I'll be able to tell my family way down the line, and I'm super excited for that."
