WEATHER ACTION ALERT DAY TODAY: Tracking frigid temperatures and slick roads

Good morning and happy Monday. We’re waking up to conditions that feel much more like winter across the area.

It is very chilly outside this morning as strong northwest winds continue to move through the region. Wind gusts earlier this morning have been near 40 to 50 mph. Wind alerts are expected to expire between 5 and 7 a.m. as gusts gradually weaken throughout the morning. By the afternoon, wind gusts should settle closer to 20 to 30 mph.

Even though winds will calm down compared to earlier this morning, they will still pack a punch and continue pulling colder air into the region.

Temperatures this morning are in the low teens. However, with the strong winds, wind chill values are hovering around 10 degrees below zero. The cold air is also keeping roadways very chilly, which may lead to a few slick spots in some areas.

While the snowfall has ended, there are still some icy patches and leftover snow on roadways, especially on bridges and other elevated surfaces. Because of the cold temperatures and potential for slick spots, today is a KQ2 Action Alert Day.

Temperatures will remain quite cold throughout the day, with afternoon highs only reaching the upper 20s. Overnight lows will dip back into the low teens before a warmup begins Tuesday.

Highs will return to the 40s Tuesday, and the warming trend continues through midweek. Temperatures could climb into the 70s by Wednesday, upper 70s by Thursday, and even into the 80s by Friday.
